Finding the Meaning of 'Grace'

The collection was nearly completed by the time the name 'Amazing Grace' came to me. I kept asking myself “whatʼs the direction of this collection?” Adding new designs and fabrics each week, pushing back the photo shoot dates, what was supposed to be a small capsule collection was starting to expand into an established Autumn/Winter range. I was also finding it difficult to select the right model to represent the look and feel of the collection.

'Corded Hoodie Jacket Tobacco', 'Three-Tone Scarf' Wine' & 'Magic Midi Skirt'

So letting go of all logic, just chilling out and practicing what I preach, I went into my meditation room and asked for guidance.

Grace, acting with grace, being graceful, were the words looping through my mind. Then I opened up my computer to look for possible models and a tall, graceful, elegant, beautiful girl with the name ‘Grace H‘ stared back at me. Hence the decision was made. 'Amazing Grace' was the perfect name for this collection.

My purpose, and personal brief, for every collection is always about sustainability, thinking global and acting local. This range is no different.

'Hallelujah Top' & 'Ava Shorts Rose'

Itʼs important to me as a designer to co-ordinate previous collections with what's current, getting maximum use from each treasured item. Each piece in the ‘Amazing Graceʼ collection works seamlessly back with Magic, Angel and Wave.

Cotton corduroy pant suits, silk crepe de chine bias slips, silk georgette blouses and cotton/silk stripe shirting with touches of black French lace make up this beautifully elegant, graceful collection.

Behind the Collection: The Ultimate Essentials

When I was asked by my intern Samantha, what was my inspiration behind the “Ultimate Essentials Collection”, I took a deep breath, a long pause and a few moments of reflection. This collection is not about me or my favourites (even though they are, because of the classic shapes , incredible fit and beautiful fabrics).

Instead, it is about YOU, your choices - the pieces that my incredibly loyal Tengdahl clients purchase and wear every day. The pieces they choose for that important interview, special occasion and the first items they pack for travelling the globe. This collection is about listening, developing, fine tuning and producing all your favourite pieces over 3 decades of designing my brand. Here are a few of those wonderful comments I have the immense pleasure of hearing every day, whether I’m in the shop or out socially...

“ Are you making this dress again? It’s my favourite and I have worn this one out.”

“These wide leg pants fit me like no other. I wear them at least once a week.”

“I love the pockets on this jacket. I hide my business cards there just in case I need to hand one out at a meeting.”

“My husband loves me wearing the wrap knit top… it’s classic and figure flattering at the same time. Is there another colour?”

“What is it about a classic shirt maker dress? I feel so feminine every time I wear it."

“ I always take the the slim line pant and 3/4 sleeve jacket whenever I travel… they’re the first things I pack.”

“My girlfriends say to me, don’t bother buying any other brand. Tengdahl always looks amazing on you…. Is that dress new? Ummmmmm....its 20 years old. Vintage Tengdahl.”

And there are hundreds more...

So, I wanted to say “thank you” to the most amazing women I have the privilege to meet, dress and listen to every day. You are MY inspiration behind this all time ultimate, much-loved, classic collection.
