Cruise09 Collection: Cruise Into Summer
Julie says Tengdahl’s annual Cruise Collection is her favourite to design because she can relate to it.
“Whether we stay in Queensland or go overseas, we need clothes that provide the comfort and elegance to get through the busy summer season and the different roles we dress for as mothers, entertainers, partygoers and vacationers.”
The resulting collection tests new shapes using linen from one of the oldest Irish linen mills in the world, combining its earthy tones with splashes of blue, violet and pink mirroring the quintessential beach sunset.
“The chalky, metallic effect created by perfect little intricate clusters of shells inspired the use of sequins throughout the collection,” Julie says.
Vibrant hand designed prints in aqua and electric blue are reminiscent of the coral surrounding the island. With glamourous tulle-lined sequined vests and elegant wide-leg drawstring pants, Julie hopes the range will provide a selection of styles that can be worn with confidence and comfort.
“The flowing lines and comfortable fits are designed to accommodate all figures and allow as much – or as little – accentuation on the figure as the wearer desires,” she says.
“It might even inspire women to escape to a little Queensland getaway of their own this summer.”

SUMMER 2009 COLLECTION: SING A RAINBOW
What is fashion worthy? This is the question Julie posed when creating the summer 09 collection. Aside from the basic functional need for clothing, garments really reflect who we are – which led her to think of the multilayered woman; the mother, the partner, the friend, the academic, the creator, and how our wardrobe can represent the vast depth of a woman’s role in life. Women’s ability to be many things to many people is fascinating, and Julie envisioned each fabric layer embodying their different facets.
The colour palette of the collection is inspired by the spectrum of the rainbow, and the concept of vibrancy, growth and new life following the rain. Beautiful things are born from cloudy, grey moments in nature, as in life.
The collection emphasises womanliness, sensuality and elegance, merging miasmic fabrics such as silk chiffon and crepe de chine with the structure and glamour of duchess silk, lightweight woven wool and silk shirring. The designs also explore new proportions, with exaggerated and dramatic shapes, draping the fabric over the body in some designs, while twisting it around the figure in others.

Boudoir Classic is a 'Cami - Chameleon'...
The Tengdahl ‘Boudoir Collection’ features a classic camisole, matching french lace-trimmed shorts and negligee – handmade in pure silk.
Designer Julie Tengdahl was inspired by the romance and sensual nature of simple silk and french lace;
“Women always feel beautiful when wearing it,” Julie said.
The versatility of the classic cami makes it a perfect investment piece because it is a ‘chameleon’ design, taking on the function of whatever it is worn with.
“Which means you can team it with a pair of bed shorts, jeans and a scarf – or slip it under a classic smoking suit to take you from the boudoir to the boardroom,” Julie said.

Summer in the City
Bursts of lilac from jacaranda trees, the red carpet laid by poinciana blossoms and the deep, cooling green of a shady fig tree by the river; Tengdahl’s High Summer collection is called ‘Summer In The City’ because it embodies everything that is fabulous about Brisbane during this season.
From the heady relaxation of holidays at the beach to the glamour of a New Years Eve ball - summer lunches with the ladies and backyard barbeques with the family.
More than ever, this collection is about colour and vibrancy. Sensual and flamboyant, it uses vintage textile designs from Liberty of London and delicate embellishments of Sophie Hallette couture lace. Made from silk and georgette, the designs are comfortable and versatile, designed to work with the classic foundation pieces of your wardrobe.
Enjoy summer. Enjoy time with your family and loved ones. And enjoy this beautiful city!
